AIA Hong Kong – Sept President’s Message

Dear Members and Friends,

Greetings from AIA Hong Kong!

September started off with the opening of William Lim’s Fundamental, showcasing forty years of his work and highlighting the inspiration for his designs from the east. Many of you attended the preview night and joined in the roundtable discussion that I moderated with a panel that included key local and international designers. I also attended the AIA Reception in Seoul with our AIA President, Elizabeth Chu Richter, and Ray Kang This was well attended and could well be the beginning of a chapter in Korea. Some us also attended the AIA International Region (IR) conference in Kyoto organized by George Kunihiro and Christine Bruckner, President of the IR. Several keynote speeches were given by famous Japanese architects such as Fumihiko Maki, Kengo Kuma, Shigeru Ban as well as Ken Yeang, and there were many building, heritage and city tours that explored Kyoto and environs, with a memorable end-of-conference dinner at Kodaiji temple. This, in particular, was a magical night and a tough act to follow.

H&A Awards Ceremony

We will this month (September 30th) with our signature event, the Honors and Awards Ceremony, sponsored by NorthGlass. Again, thanks to Gregory Leong and Brian Jan our H&A committee chairs and our jury panel that included Leslie Lu, AIA, of HK Design Institute, Michael Ngu, AIA, of architects61 from Singapore, Michael Thanner, AIA, of Tange Associates from Tokyo, Hannes Pfau of UNStudio from Shanghai and Rocco Yim of Rocco Design. Please join us at the H&A Awards Ceremony to view the various submissions and celebrate this year’s award winners.

Q4 – Urban Transformation – the Story of Lan Kwai Fong with Allan Zeman

We will have our fourth quarterly including a tour of California Tower on October 15th to listen to the story of Lan Kwai Fong with Allan Zeman. It should be very interesting to learn about the urban transformation that brought about creation of this very popular entertainment district in Central, Hong Kong.

AIA Hong Kong Annual Dinner – Including AIA IR Awards

Our Annual Dinner this year will be held at the Island Shangri-la on November 12th, a time for all of us to come together and also celebrate the AIA IR Award winners. We are still looking for sponsors as this is a great opportunity for our CAs to showcase their products.

Potential Trip to Delhi-Agra-Jaipur, India

As I mentioned previously, there is an urban development conference in Jaipur, India, from December 9-11 and we are trying to organize a trip to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, perhaps Chandigarh and Ahmedabad, if possible, so you can also see Le Corbusier and Louis Khan’s buildings. Ideally, this would occur towards the end of the year from December 6 to 15 or so. Planning is in progress so stay tuned for further details.
