Winner:
Scott Findley, AIA, RMJM HK Ltd.
Award: Merit Award for Architecture
Located at the center of Shanghai's
densely populated Zhabei district; direct access to two metro
stations and an underserved and growing middle-class market.
4.5 FAR across 15 buildings: an extension of the district.
Retail building heights limited to 4 stories - tenants stacked
vertically to maximize street activity. Architectural form/facade
reserved: buildings serve as background allowing people spaces,
activities and merchandise to dominate. Human Scale/Hierarchy:
eleven outdoor spaces; 2 km of pedestrian promenade; spaces
for daily use and special occasions; a place about exploration
and discovery. Environmentally and economically sustainable
community serving its city, district and community; a model
for authentic and timeless place making within the frantic
growth of Chinese cities.
