Lang Fang Eco - Smart City
Winner: HOK International Asia Pacific Ltd.
Award:
Merit Award for Urban Design

Langfang Eco-Smart City is an evolution in the eco-city concept-normally applied to new development areas-into a feasible, applied plan for existing cities and is the first time this approach will be implemented in China. Located in the dynamic Beijing-Tianjin metroplex, pertinent issues facing the city today include: sprawl pressure, degrading building stock, a dearth of transit options, drought, single-crop farming resulting in declining water quality and quantity, and land subsidence. In response, the city has embraced an independent approach as the government and party leadership strives to proactively shape its future.

Langfang Eco-Smart City addresses...

water balance through greenbelt wetlands and aquifer recharge stopping land subsidence; introducing green and blue fingers into the urban core, suturing ruptures in the urban fabric caused by thrail track and capturing water; slow-transit oriented neighborhoods and a finer grid of walkable streets to promote social sustainability; a high energy cluster that captures waste heat to supplement geothermal sources; encouraging higher densities for more compact, mixed-use developments towards a population maximum; incremental growth strategies that allows the city to evolve through market forces; smart grid and real-time measurement of resources and infrastructure performance for supply optimization; distinct character to support economic investment; economic focus of education and health to sustain generations of residents; retention of local food production, farmland, and model villages for artisanal organic export and tourism.
