he phenomenon of rapid urbanization implies high-density populations and a scarcity of living space. As a result of vertical developments, apartments are becoming smaller and smaller, and a more intimate relationship is created between residential and non-residential buildings. The notion of ‘compact living space’ is no longer limited to Hong Kong, rather, it is now a universal topic in cities such as London, New York and Tokyo where apartments have also become smaller and the city has become an extension of the home.

So: Have our homes become smaller, or bigger?

In the past, discussions of urbanization often focused on the push and pull between urban and rural; now, the push and pull is between the city and apartments, the functions of which complement each other. Lifestyle, communication among people, interaction between the environment and inhabitants…all can be richer and beneficial to the economy. Compact apartments can improve quality of life as well as the urban environment. They also minimize the use of valuable resources in their construction, and energy consumption.
