Summary:

The seminar will be structured in two parts and will explore recent developments in the use of super-efficient ceiling fans used in conjunction with air conditioning to improve HVAC efficiency and save energy.

We will initially examine several award-winning projects: Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li, Chengdu, Innhouse Kunming and the Integer Bamboo House – with an emphasis on learning about the integrated design processes involved.

The above introduction will be followed up with a critical discussion of how increasing air speed via ceiling fans can provide a low-cost solution to satisfying the need for indoor thermal comfort. Combining fans with traditional air conditioning will be shown to be a design strategy that can help reduce cooling and heating costs by 20% and 30%, respectively. Additional benefits include less ductwork, improved ventilation rates and reduced condensation, all of which can help contribute to certifications such as LEED and/or BEAM Plus.

Speakers:

Mr. Peaker Chu, Senior Architect of the Oval partnership and a member of the Octagon partnership.
