DESCRIPTION

How are architects exploring new ideas about sustainability and carrying out research through digital technologies? For architects to maintain a competitive edge in the global marketplace, green innovation is the key to success; the design of new processes, technologies and materials that combat carbon emissions and improve the performance of buildings are paramount. Many offices are now collaborating with external sustainability consultants while others are developing research teams in-house.  High profile practices such as Foster + Partners, HOK and Aedas are setting the bar high, adapting and creating new technologies and materials, and borrowing ways of working from other disciplines.  This talk will highlight the work of 14 firms that are at the forefront of research into sustainability and that are implementing these findings into their work. Featured studios will include Atelier Ten, Aedas, Biomimicry Guild, Foster + Partners, 3XN/GXN, Hoberman Associates, Nikken Sekkei, Perkins and Will, Rau, 10 Design and more.

THE SPEAKER

Terri Peters is an architect, researcher and writer based in Toronto.  Her PhD research concentrated on strategies of sustainable building, in particular the greening of post-war housing in Denmark.  She has had  more than 100 articles published in journals such as MARK, FRAME, Architectural Design, Azure and others, on topics of sustainability, building transformations and the architectural implications of various new, cutting-edge technologies.
