The Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental Hotel — or Quarry Hotel — is a unique resort currently under construction in the Songjiang area of Shanghai. Built on the site of a 90-100 meter deep abandoned quarry, the design was inspired by the stunning location and the natural environment of the rocky cliffs, waterfalls, and surrounding hills. Upon completion, the abandoned quarry will be partially filled with water to create an artificial lake, while passive design features – the orientation, low profile, grass roof and the microclimate created by the thermal properties of the quarry rock mass and the water – will contribute to the project’s sustainability.
The architect’s original vision was of sequential hanging gardens resembling a green hill extending down the face of the quarry. Both the rock face and the gently curved wings of the guest room blocks will surround an atrium made of glass and disguised as a ‘waterfall’ that will run from the lowest level of the hotel back up to the surrounding ground level.
Construction is progressing at a swift pace and the main superstructure of the guest wings and the central waterfall core have been completed.
The project received the Gold Prize for Chinese Future Buildings at the 2011 MIPIM Asia International Conference in Hong Kong, and the National Geographic Discovery Channel is filming the construction for an episode of their popular Megastructures TV series, to be completed in time for the hotel opening.
Speaker: Martin Jochman, Principal Director, JADE+QA
With over 25 years of experience in design and construction, Martin Jochman has completed the master planning, concept and detailed design of a number of large-scale international projects while at Atkins. In 2013, he established JADE+QA, a multidisciplinary design studio based in Shanghai, where he oversees the design development, construction documentation and construction of the Quarry Hotel.
In this lecture, he will share with us how the various challenges of this project have been overcome with technical innovations, and discuss the benefits of going beyond conventional design solutions.
