An Evening with Maria Yee |
|
20 Apr 2011 ,
The Main Library @ China Club,
The Old Bank of China Bldg., Bank St., Central |
Maria Yee is a unique person with a unique story. A child during China's Cultural revolution, her career began as a laborer in a rock quarry at the age of 15. She went on to apprentice as a machinist and studiedto be a mechanical engineer. Working in Beijing, Maria frequented palaces, museums and temples where she fell in love with furniture from the Ming Dynasty and became inspired to revitalize the art of traditional furniture making. She organized a group of expert craftsman to handcraft museum quality Ming Dynasty reproductions, teaching herself traditional wood working and hand joinery techniques. Eventually Maria moved to California and became the first designer to handcraft furnishings using pure joinery in a modern manufacturing environment. Her 350,000 sf factory in China is dedicated to protecting the earth by using innovative green manufacturing and sustainable materials in every piece. Maria Yee Inc. furniture is critically acclaimed for its California contemporary designs and philosophy of environmental responsibility in both the home furnishing and hospitality arena.
Please join us to meet Maria and learn more about her furniture, her factory and her philosophy.
