About Government Hill:
Since the 1840s, Government Hill has housed the Government of Hong Kong SAR’s main offices and served as a place of decision-making through Hong Kong’s historical days of WWII, colonialism and the Handover in 1997. More recently, Hong Kong’s Government operations have moved from the West Wing and East Wing to the new Government Complex at Tamar in Admiralty. In 2009, in view of the shortage of office buildings in Central, Government proposed that a portion of Government Hill was to be sold to private developers with plans to demolish the West Wing to build a 32-storey commercial tower. To which the public responded negatively, resulting in the formation of the Government Hill Concern Group with extensive campaigns to “Save our Government Hill.” As a result of the growing concern regarding the conservation of Government Hill, adaptive reuse was deemed a more appropriate solution to help preserve existing buildings within the site. The recent decision to retain the West Wing was welcomed, but there are some concerns of public access to the site and its use as an open space. It is to house the Secretary for Justice and law-related non-government organizations.
