AIA Hong Kong Tribute to Barry Fegan Will, FHKIA RAIA APA
Dear AIA Members and Friends,
It is with profound sadness that our Chapter has learned that Barry Fegan Will, FHKIA RAIA APA, died on 29 August 2019 at the age of 74.
Barry Will was Executive Director of WCWP International, a globally recognized architectural practice of 150 staff with offices in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shanghai. In addition, he was renowned as an architectural educator in his former roles as both Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture (1990-98) at the University of Hong Kong as well as a greatly respected leader of many professional institutes. These included serving as President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (1999-2000), Chairman of the Architects Registration Board (1991-92) and Chairman of ARCASIA (2003-04), among several other leadership positions and distinctions.
In addition, Professor Will lectured and served on exam panels and advisory committees at several regional schools of architecture, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong, among others.
Earlier this summer, AIA Hong Kong nominated Barry Will to receive Honorary Affiliate Membership “in recognition of distinguished contributions in the Chapter’s region for more than four decades as a leading architect in global practice, faculty dean of architecture, mentor to students and young practitioners, and chairman of architectural institutes, boards and councils in Hong Kong, China and Asia.” This title will be awarded posthumously at the Chapter’s annual awards ceremony in November.
In addition to his contributions to architecture, we will remember Barry Will for his engaging personality and generosity in all aspects of his life – professional, academic and institutional – and he will be greatly missed by us all.
