Located in a beautiful Ma On Shan site surrounded by forest greens, Li Po Chun United World College needed to enhance their student’s learning experiences and facilities to host international students from around the world. Creating a unique learning environment by connecting the new learning center to the courtyard – north and forest – south, was our design priority along with sustainability and advanced technology. Wooden-framed windows offer gracious views of the courtyard and seating areas, providing energizing daylight for students. Folding garage doors connect the indoor-outdoor spaces together when opened and when closed become solid walls to keep the air cool. Working within the boundary of the existing 20th century modern architecture, we infused a new learning center into the academic building with minimal design language.
A digitally advanced library with movable shelving maximizes space and three dynamic classrooms of varying sizes (small, medium, large) with writable desks and walls optimizes functionality. ‘Learning street’ a large pathway meandering between the classrooms is furnished with sitting nooks, step seats and study spots. Every corner provides opportunities for individual and group study – where students and teachers can explore new ways of learning and teaching.
A large multi-functional classroom and social hub connected to the courtyard were designed as a space for music or film nights and for a variety of indoor and outdoor events welcoming students and visitors from around the world. Sustainability was at the forefront of this project as it has achieved Fitwel and LEED certification and is fire safety approved.
