We are delighted to advise that this month’s Grumpy Hour is scheduled for Thursday, July 16.

It has been co-organised by the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong and Macau and the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists, and will be hosted by Commons Lab by Architecture Commons. Preceding the usual networking and mingling with old and new friends over a drink or two, with snacks, there will be a book sharing session with the authors Adam Štěch, who will discuss his book The Modernist Travel Guide, and Prudence Lau and Vanessa Yeung on their book Hong Kong Art Deco Architecture.

About: The Modernist Travel Guide

The Modernist Travel Guide is a pocket-sized reference book written and photographed by Adam Štěch, featuring nearly 400 of his favorite examples of modernist architecture in 30 major cities around the world. Drawing on Štěch’s extensive archive of 150,000 photographs documenting more than 10,000 buildings and interiors in 40 countries, the guide is an indispensable travel companion for design lovers everywhere, offering the backstories, addresses, and accessibility details for iconic homes and buildings as well as unknown hidden gems.

About: Hong Kong Art Deco Architecture

The 1920s Art Deco movement is often neglected when considering the architectural history of Asia and Hong Kong. This book examines how Art Deco became part of the modern Hong Kong ethos via such architectural typologies as public and institutional buildings, residential properties, and our commercial, industrial, and utility infrastructure. Prudence Lau and Vanessa Yeung will demonstrate how our Art Deco heritage bears witness to the city’s societal progress, early efforts at modernization before WWII and the postwar era, and its aesthetic connections to the international style.
