DESCRIPTION
Fabrication techniques, 3D visualization tools and glazing technology have advanced significantly in the last two decades, allowing architects the freedom to design façades that were impossible to conceive of before. In this, the second seminar of the Advanced Materials Tripartite Series, three distinguished architects — Mr. Ken Wai of Aedas, Mr. Martin Riese of Front Inc., and Mr. Karl James of Meinhardt Façade Technology — will showcase several advanced glazing applications and facade design processes used in successful built projects. Following the presentations, a panel discussion will be led by Mr. Sammy Hui of Dow Corning about the future of glazing and facade systems and what this will mean for us as architects and designers.

Karl James, RIBA, MSFE, Meinhardt Façade Technology

Karl James is Director of the Meinhardt Façade group for North Asia, responsible for the team’s technical performance and business development. With expertise in architecture and façade engineering, Karl is a designer of complex geometric facades who actively encourages a sustainable approach to all projects.

Martin Riese, Partner, Front

Martin Riese is a licensed professional Architect and co-founding partner of the New York-based integrated design practice Front. He has over two decades of professional experience working with Front, Foster and Partners, Calatrava and Gehry Technologies, where he contributed to the design and construction of numerous signature architectural projects around the world. He has expertise in the design and procurement of innovative façades and in Building Information Modeling.Martin has lectured and published on the subject of transformations in the construction industry and building lifecycle information management. He also teaches architectural design at the University of Hong Kong.

Ken Wai, RIBA, HKIA, PRC Class I Registered Architect, Aedas
Ken Wai is passionate about architecture. Over the years he has directed the design of a wide spectrum of architectural projects on both a national and global scale. His specialisation lies in holistic, mixed-use developments, major infrastructure facilities, high end office towers, luxury hotels and bespoke private residences.
In every commission he undertakes, he seeks to first understand the design objectives and then strikes the perfect balance between achieving those objectives – and innovation, functionality and design excellence.Ken is a member of the RIBA and a registered architect in Hong Kong. He is also a PRC Class I registered architect and a committee member of the China Green Building Council.

Panel discussion moderated by Sammy Hui

Sammy Hui is the Business Development Leader for High Performance Building Solutions at Dow Corning. With over 20 years professional experience in the building industry, Sammy joined Dow Corning in 1995 and has served in different commercial functions include Sales, Marketing, Communications and Innovation, specialized in the façade glazing industry. In parallel he is a current Board Member of the Hong Kong Façade Association and a Committee Member of USGBC Platinum.
