Set within a beautiful natural setting, the recently opened Che Kung Temple Sports Complex serves the Shatin community as both a sports centre and a place of leisure. Unlike the majority of similar sports facilities in Hong Kong where everything is tightly packed into a “box”, the Che Kung Temple Sports Centre features a series of naturally ventilated garden-like spaces that enrich the user experience and make the building more sustainable.

We are delighted to have Mr. Thomas CK Wan, Chief Architect of the Architectural Services Department lead us through the sports centre on October 30th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, with support from Mr. Donald Leung, Senior Architect, and Mr. CS Suen, Project Architect.

As both members and non-members are welcome to attend this event, please email rsvp@aiahk.org to save your spot now.

What We Learned

Thomas CK Wan from ArchSD:
“Every scene is a movie. I plan what the audience is going to see. Every 10-20 steps you have to pause, because architecture is about living. It was never about going from A to B”
The use of planes breaks down the bulky massing inherited from the programs. Every view is carefully framed to create spatial layering and transparency of space. These openings also allows natural #ventilation for all circulation and bathrooms.
Our corporate members Amtrac provided different species of wood (Southern pine, American walnut) for the interior and exterior.
