Dear Members:

M+ will open its doors on November 12th, 2021. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with TFP Farrells and Arup, the long-awaited opening of M+ marks a significant milestone in the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District as a vital component of Hong Kong’s art-scape.

With a mission to amass and exhibit a world-class collection of 20th and 21st-century visual arts from a Hong Kong perspective, how may this collection and archive change the way we understand and re-shape our city?

Join us for a guided tour of the new museum, followed by a discussion on the intersection of art, architecture, and curation with Doryun ChongWilliam Lim and Marisa Yiu at the M+ lounge (designed by AIA Hong Kong members CL3 and OPENUU) on Tuesday, November 2nd.

What We Learned:

Earlier this month, our members learnt how the museum designed by Herzog & de Meuron generously gives space to patrons to mentally prepare them for the contemporary art exhibition. They are also the very few museums in the world that allow people to interact with their art collection. In M+ living gallery, they took out the safety line to allow a living art among patrons. The building connection to West Kowloon and Hong Kong also allows the museum to be an icon on both sides of the Victoria Harbour.
We are thankful to Doryun Chong Chief Curator, Marisa Yiu, AIA of Design Trust and William Lim, FAIA of CL3 Architects Limited for explaining how their curation can help to bring the art world into everyone’s daily lives. High art is no longer exclusive to certain people in the city.
