Dear Members

You are cordially invited to join us for the AIA Hong Kong Coastal Architecture & Landscape Tour – Sai Kung Island Hopping. The tour will allow members to experience the unique architectural, topographical, and material cultures of Hong Kong’s coastal settlements, and showcase the valuable natural ecology and heritage of the many islands in Sai Kung. Combined with an on-site presentation and visits to a number of new projects, the tour will also introduce new modes of design, research and practice being carried out by emerging architects and artists in Hong Kong.

The tour is supported by the 2023 Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival, which, through collaboration with local and non-local artists, youngsters and villagers, has turned the islands into “open museums”. In turn, this has allowed for a unique, new travel experience that integrates the arts, religion, culture, heritage and green elements for the participants to experience.

The tour will be led by Alan Cheung, HKIA, Co-Founder and Managing Director of One Bite Design Studio, who has been leading the curatorial effort of the Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival for the past two years. Architect Su Chang, AIA, principal of Su Chang Design Research Office, will share with us his on-going research into material culture, building techniques and the relationship between the architecture and natural geography of Hong Kong’s coastal settlements. Chang will also present the research, design and history of the Wave Weaving Pavilion, a rest stop on Kau Sai island that celebrates the fishing village culture and island geography in relation to our city.

About our Tour Leaders

Alan Cheung, HKIA
Co-Founder and Managing Director, One Bite Design Studio

Alan Cheung co-founded One Bite Design Studio (onebite) and One Bite Social, leading the former to become the first B-Corp in Hong Kong’s architectural field. The latter is onebite’s community arm and was registered as a charity in 2023. A registered architect, Alan focused on improving the quality of public spaces and encouraging urban innovations. His design achievements include winning the Urban Land Institute 2019 Asia Pacific Award for Excellence for the Kai Yip Estate playground, and Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award 2022 for the Siu Hei Court Play Space. Alan was also part of the team that clinched the DFA Design for Asia Award 2021 for designing the GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Stores.

Su Chang, AIA
Founder and Principal, Su Chang Design Research Office

Su Chang is Principal of Su Chang Design Research Office and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong. His work integrates traditional crafts and familiar-seeming elements with contemporary spatial cultures, provoking a broader discussion of architecture as geography. These projects embrace multiple senses of materiality and living – within the formal language of architecture. Chang’s recent research and output focus on the relationship between architecture and our nearby water environment, as well as (post-) millennial arts and living spaces.
