The world is facing an increasingly aging population, more and more of whom are afflicted with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Architects can have a real and tangible impact on the design of long-term care facilities that cater to people who need to live in what are now called memory care facilities. It is well kown that a properly designed environment can sometimes reduce Alzheimer patients’ symptoms of anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, hallucinations and agitation.

This course will share some best practices for the design of these highly specialized interior spaces, as well as a few items to avoid or carefully consider. More specifically, it will explore how the selection of interior colors, use of lighting, incorporation of daylight, and specification of flooring can help create an environment that promotes calm behavior and comfort, and encourages healthy socialization and safe ambulation.

Speaker: Athena Lam

With more than 10 years’ experience in the flooring products industry, Athena Lam is the Regional Sales Manager for Tarkett in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. She leads the company’s efforts in cultivating innovation, technology, use of materials and sustainability
