Roger Nissim, FRICS FHKIS RPS, is the author of Land Administration and Practice in Hong Kong, which is now in its fifth printing and required reading for urban planning and urban design courses at CUHK and HKU. More recently, Roger authored The First Estates: The Story of Fairview Park and Hong Lok Yuen.

At this event, Roger will present his latest book, The Placemakers of Hong Kong to our members and friends.

The Placemakers of Hong Kong pays homage to what local development companies, charitable organizations and the Hong Kong government have contributed to the enhancement of our constantly evolving urban and rural landscape. Far from being solely profit-driven, developers and urban planners have been vital to the community by creating and designing urban spaces for the public, increasing walkability, and embracing sustainable design—a process called ‘placemaking’. The new book also recognizes that just as important are the subsequent activities necessary to keep each site relevant and up-to-date.

Featuring five case studies from the past and one that examines the ambitious and far-reaching plans for the Northern Metropolis, this book tells the story of Hong Kong’s miraculous urban development over the past few decades.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A session moderated by Prof. Nelson Chen, who contributed commentaries to this publication.

About the Author

Roger Nissim, FRICS FHKIS RPS

Roger has been a pivotal figure in Hong Kong’s urban development, with an extensive career in both the public and private sectors. For more than two decades, he was a senior official in the Hong Kong government’s Lands Department, rising to the rank of Assistant Director. In this role, he was instrumental in overseeing some of the city’s most transformative projects, including several New Towns and the land formation for Chek Lap Kok Airport. He later joined the private sector as a consultant to a major property developer, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of how government policy and private enterprise intersect to shape the city.

He also taught as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Real Estate of the University of Hong Kong.

Honorary Professor of Architecture, CUHK

Nelson is an award-winning architect and the founding principal of Nelson Chen Architects, a diversified practice offering full professional services in architecture, master planning and interior design, as well as renovations and adaptive reuse. The firm was established in 1987 and is the recipient of Architecture Firm Awards from both the AIA International Region and the AIA Hong Kong Chapter. Since 1992, Nelson has served at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in several academic and leadership positions including as Professor of Practice and Director of the School of Architecture.

He was Founding President of the AIA Hong Kong Chapter in 1997 and is the only concurrent Fellow of the AIA, RIBA and HKIA.
