Dear Members and Friends of AIA Hong Kong
Tai Kok Tsui Pavilion designed by Su Chang Design Research Office was the winning entry in the Open Call Competition launched by the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) in 2023, and was completed and opened to the public in January 2025. The competition sought to highlight young, ecologically conscious designers aiming to create a future that values sustainability, art, culture, and creativity.
Funded by the Urban Renewal Fund (URF) and organized by the Public Art Department at HKAC, the design of the pavilion combines galvanized steel with laminated bamboo to create a dynamic communal space that has transformed the Tai Kok Tsui neighbourhood and reactivated the public’s collective memory of a “place between sea and land” provoking a new image of Tai Kok Tsui’s future.
During this tour, Su Chang will explain his design concept and strategy, and how the Pavilion contributes to both the social life of the community and to sustainability in design.
Two panel discussions will be held afterwards, the first one focusing on design competitions, generally, and the urban renewal process in Hong Kong, with:
- Elvy Chang, General Manager, Brand and Design, Sino Group
- Erica Chui, Chief Executive & Secretary to the Board, Urban Renewal Fund
- Gordon Lo, Project Director of RE: Tai Kok Tsui, Hong Kong Arts Centre
- Yimei Chan, AIA, Competition Juror, Co-Founder and Design Director of LOD
This panel will be moderated by Su Chang, AIA.
The second panel will focus on the technical aspects and challenges encountered during construction, with:
