Dear Members

We are delighted to invite you to attend the third event in our 2023 First Projects series with Dr. Erik L’Heureux, FAIA, National University of Singapore.
The talk will focus on environmental considerations in L’Heureux’s design work, especially how architects can create sustainable environments when designing in hot and wet climates and dense urban environments. He will reflect on his early architectural experiences in a temperate environment and how those have been transformed by twenty years of living and practicing on the equator.

About the Speaker

Dr. Erik L’Heureux is a Dean’s Chair Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore (NUS), a Fellow of the AIA and the founder of Pencil Office.

His pioneering integration of academic research into mid-20th-century equatorial architecture and its relationship to the urban environment, climate and atmosphere in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Ghana and Brazil with his creative practice earned him a Harvard University GSD Wheelwright Prize in 2015. He has completed more than 40 projects, including the “simple” series (A Simple Headquarters, A Simple Terrace House, A Simple Factory Building) and such other built work as An Equatorial School of Architecture, Hut House, Stereoscopic House and the 1000 Singapores exhibition for the Venice Biennale.

L’Heureux’s projects have received design awards from the AIA, the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA), INDE Design and the World Architecture Festival (WAF), and have been featured in nearly 100 professional and design periodicals, including Oculus, Icon, InDesign, Design+Architecture, Architecture Asia, Detail, and Archinesia among others.
