J Lee Rofkind, FAIA, has been elevated to fellow by the American Institute of Architects for her work and contribution to the AIA. She shared with us her path to becoming a fellow.
“AIA has been an important part of my life since university. While still a student I joined the Philadelphia chapter and volunteered to assist in hosting the annual National convention in Philadelphia. It was a phenomenal event, a city-wide block party. I was hooked on the profession and organization and have remained a member since. Every new city I moved to I tracked down the local chapter to stay connected to the AIA tribe. One of the first people I met in Hong Kong was Nelson Chen, he was collecting architects to start a Hong Kong chapter. Key founding members of the chapter have become my life-long friends: Nelson Chen, Peter Basmajian, William Lim, Grover Dear and there are many more AIA members I can count as good friends. They have cheered me on and mentored me throughout the years.
Applying for FAIA, gave me the opportunity to relive the last 29 years of my life in Hong Kong and all the amazing events, tours, and brilliant lectures we brought not just to Hong Kong but throughout Asia. I was able to share some great projects with my peers in Washington and also found quite a few grimace-worthy photographs of me in the archives. I had no idea how many events I was involved in until I had to list them all in my 40-page FAIA application – AIA Hong Kong has been a brilliant adventure for me with many more years to go.
