We invite you to join Learning From Timber: Sustainable Applications in Different Environments, co-organized by AIA Hong Kong and BCI Equinox.

The panel will discuss the use of timber hardwoods and softwoods as sustainable materials. Key topics will include the use of different kinds of timber through project case-studies, the aesthetic appeal of timber in interior and exterior design, and the relative durability of different types of timber. The talk will address sustainable sourcing, maintenance and the current challenges of timber applications in Hong Kong, particularly in response to different client needs.

About the Speakers

Clover Lee, Assoc. AIA

Clover Lee is the founder and director of plusClover, which was established in the US in 2001. The firm relocated to Hong Kong in 2009 and has since completed more than a dozen projects, including the large scale Playcode installation at the Admiralty MTR station and the gradated / colored façade of the residential tower, Ruby Court. plusClover’s work has been published widely in numerous journals, newspapers and books throughout Asia, Europe and the US and is featured in Amass, a monograph that showcases the firm’s visually unique projects of the past 20 years..

Clover Lee received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University and a Master of Design Studies from Harvard University. She has taught at Rice University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, UCLA and USC, and holds visiting lecturer positions at both the University of Michigan and the University of Hong Kong.

Evelyn Ting, AIA
Co-founder and Managing Director, New Office Works (NOW)

Evelyn oversees architectural projects, publications and research initiatives at NOW. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Columbia University and her Master of Architecture from MIT. She was a teaching assistant in the MIT Graduate Core Design Studio and was part of the curatorial team for the U.S pavilion at the 14th Venice Biennale. She is a registered architect in Massachusetts and is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Andy To
Managing Director, North Asia, U.S. Green Building Council

Andy To joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) in January 2018 to oversee operations in the North Asia region, which encompasses China, Japan, and South Korea. In this role, he leads a team dedicated to promoting the widespread adoption of the LEED green building certification system, owned and developed by USGBC, as well as other sustainable-development related certification systems under the GBCI.

Before assuming his current position, Andy served as the Managing Director of Asset Services for Greater China at CBRE, a Fortune 500 company and a global leader in commercial real estate consulting and investment. During his tenure, he led the CBRE team in property and facility management, as well as real estate finance accounting services for more than 300 commercial projects in the Greater China region.

Ed Gaskin, AIA NCARB
Associate Director, Zaha Hadid Architects

Ed co-leads the team currently in charge of the 3.2 million square foot mixed-use development atop the West Kowloon High Speed Rail Terminus. For more than a decade, he has worked with leading property developers and design teams delivering innovative solutions in unique and challenging urban settings in Hong Kong, New York and Beijing. These projects share a typology in how vertical urbanism can transform high-rise design, enhancing existing community networks and promoting the highest possible standards of sustainability.

Ed received his Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Architecture from the Harvard GSD.
