New Huanggang Port

The world’s largest land-based, single-building port and the only 24-hour passenger and vehicle clearance checkpoint between Shenzhen and Hong Kong recently became the core of the Shenzhen Hong Kong Innovation Cooperation Zone.

Replacing the original Huanggang facility that had served cross border travellers since 1991, the new port is an example of design-led infrastructure that integrates architecture, transit systems, and urban design to meet the demands of a high density, high mobility region.

Aedas served as the design architect for the New Huanggang Port and will lead this tour, offering our members firsthand insights into the project’s architectural intent, spatial strategies, systems integration and the practical decisions that enabled dramatic gains in efficiency and urban value.

What will you see on the tour?

• Vertically Integrated Design – A nine‑level complex with five floors above ground and four below, that combines passenger clearance, vehicle inspection, rail interchange, and public urban space.
• Efficient Land Use – The building achieves eight times the clearance capacity on one‑seventh of the typical land footprint, enabling much higher throughput while conserving valuable urban land.
• Operational Performance – Near‑term daily peak capacity is projected at 200,000 passengers, with long‑term capacity up to 300,000; average clearance time has been reduced from 30 minutes to 5 minutes.
• Smart Systems and Flow Design – Intelligent inspection equipment and scientifically planned passenger circulation have streamlined procedures and enhanced user experience.
• Urban Development Impact – Removal of freight inspection functions released approximately 500,000 square meters of land for future development within the innovation zone.

About the Speaker

Kehao Deng
Senior Architect, Aedas

After graduating from HKU, Kehao joined Aedas and participated in high-end hospitality, retail, commercial, and complex infrastructure projects. He began working on the new Huanggang Port project during the competition stage, in 2019, and was deeply involved in the detail design and on-site coordination work from 2023 to 2026, accumulating a wealth of project experience.

About the Moderator

Shannon Ho AIA

At Aedas, Shannon has exhibited a strong sense of architectural design and technical skills through her work on a diverse range of projects, from high-end hospitality, retail and large-scale commercial buildings to complex infrastructure developments. In recent years, she has been actively engaged in the development of Integrated Resorts (IR) throughout the region, having successfully completed several such hospitality projects in Macau.

Shannon attained her architectural degree at McGill University in Montreal and practiced architecture in Chicago before obtaining her professional license.
