We are excited to invite you to join the AIA x AHEC event in Singapore: Wood. Renewable by Nature. Sustainable by Design which will take place on November 21 and 22. You can participate online or in-person in Singapore!

On November 21, there will be a hybrid panel discussion with three distinguished experts on sustainable wood design and research at the National Museum of Singapore. The following day, we will visit relevant projects in Singapore, including the latest mass timber structures and other sustainable buildings.

PANEL DISCUSSION

Wood. Renewable by Nature. Sustainable by Design

Sustainable wood has gained popularity in recent years due to its environmentally friendly properties and versatility. From research to practical applications, there are many possibilities to use wood, in furniture, flooring, cladding, building facades – and even as structural elements.

Researchers are constantly looking for ways to improve the sustainable properties of wood via life cycle analyses and innovations in wood composites and smart materials. Wood used in interior design, architecture, and academic research offers promising opportunities in the quest for a greener and more sustainable future.

Kahn Yoon
Director, Asia Pacific, M Moser Associates

With over 30 years in the field, Kahn is an accomplished architect who has a demonstrated history of leading workplace transformations for key global clients. He excels in delivering human-centered design solutions that make a positive impact on employees and business operations. Naturally inquisitive and solution driven, Kahn undertakes each project holistically, combining strategy, aesthetics and functionality.

Deepu Mahboobani
Managing Principal, Wimberly Interiors

With an extensive portfolio of luxury hotels and resorts, restaurants, gaming salons, spas and high-end residential projects, Deepu Mahboobani brings more than 20 years of international hospitality design experience to Wimberly Interiors. As managing principal, she is responsible for the Singapore interiors studio where she maintains a sharp focus on commercial strategies that ensure design integrity, cross-discipline coordination and high quality project delivery.

Shinya Okuda
Registered Architect (JP/NL), M.Eng.
Founding Director, SkyTimber™ Tropical Renewable Architecture Design Lab
Associate Professor, National University of Singapore

Shinya Okuda is a Japan and EU registered architect who practiced with Herzog & de Meuron and Shigeru Ban prior to joining the NUS in 2008. Some of his past projects include the internationally patented Bio Shell (Biodegradable Shelter, 2012), the award-winning Cloud Arch (Ultra-light Longspan Structure, 2014) and the publicly acclaimed Groove Light Project at i Light Marina Bay in Singapore (2016). Okuda was also appointed Principal Investigator in the development of the first Tropical Mass Timber Construction system by the Ministry of National Development, Singapore (Sky Timber Project, 2016).
